Got a job offer in Manhattan and need to sort out moving my whole flat. Never done an international move before and the amount of companies out there is genuinely overwhelming. My mate moved to Toronto last year and said picking the wrong removal company was his biggest regret. Anyone actually shipped their stuff from the UK to NYC and can recommend someone reliable?

The overwhelm is completely real, there are so many companies and no obvious way to filter out the unreliable ones. When I moved from London to New York two years ago I genuinely spent more time researching removal companies than I did sorting out my actual visa situation. Made the mistake of going with the cheapest quote first, ended up cancelling and rebooking through someone else entirely. Second time around I found removals to USA from UK and the difference was night and day. They handled the full door-to-door service including customs paperwork which for a UK to US move is more complicated than people expect. No random subcontractors showing up, same people throughout the whole process. For Manhattan specifically, the logistics are trickier than most US cities because of building access rules and elevator bookings. A company that already knows this stuff saves you a serious headache on arrival day. Worth getting a quote and talking through the options before committing to anything.

Honestly, this hits hard. I had a similar spiral before my own international move — endless tabs open, every company sounding identical, and no clue who was actually trustworthy. People really underestimate how chaotic customs forms and city-specific logistics can get until they’re buried in it. The point about NYC buildings is especially true too; those access rules can turn moving day into total chaos if your movers aren’t prepared. Sometimes paying a bit more for competence saves far more stress later.
